Event Description:
Most of us are working, studying, writing, and researching from home. Many academic publishers have temporarily made portions of their content freely available for all to use. In the past several months the economy and our institutions’ budgets have changed drastically. How does all of this reframe our conversations about Open Access? What opportunities and challenges does this new reality present to us when talking to researchers and administrators about open scholarship?

The July 22nd, 1:00 pm ET, COAPI Community Call is an opportunity to hear what your colleagues are thinking and doing in response to our changed environment. It’s also an opportunity to share your thoughts and actions with the group. We have no speaker lined up because we want this to be a true community call. Some questions to consider are below. We also have some guidelines to follow to allow for a shared conversation space, so that many voices are heard.

Questions
  • What conversations can we start now to take advantage of this moment when so much usually-paywalled content is openly available?
  • What will happen when that content goes back behind the paywall?
  • How will cuts to our collections budgets impact discussions about supporting OA content or infrastructure?
  • How can we make the argument that participating and investing in OA initiatives has never been more important?

Our goal with these calls is to create a supportive community dedicated to discussion of common questions and challenges of open access policy issues, including: advocacy, creation, adoption, and implementation. The SPARC/COAPI Community Calls will be modeled on the OpenCon librarian community calls, which seek to create a supportive environment where challenges can be candidly shared and everyone present is encouraged to participate in and shape the discussion. We hope this kind of virtual community-building can facilitate more connections between those working on open access policies and strengthen all our respective efforts towards transforming the scholarly communication landscape.

The call welcomes all personnel who are involved with advocating for, creating, adopting, or implementing open access policies, and those who are interested in the topic.
